Helping food entrepreneurs thrive
FoodLab Sydney is a not-for-profit kitchen incubator that supports food entrepreneurs from high-barrier backgrounds to grow and formalise their food businesses. We do this by providing affordable kitchen space, technical assistance, mentoring and sales opportunities.
Sadly, Australia's history of racism, sexism and colonialism has manifested itself in unequal distribution of opportunities, both socially and economically. This is particularly so for new refugees, working class migrants, First Nations people, and others from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Food is a powerful way to restore this imbalance: it connects people, it helps to heal, it tells stories, it tears down racism, sexism, classism, colonialism, and it can remind us of home and loved ones. Not to mention it is a creative outlet for the culinary artist. The food industry is the perfect industry to unlock opportunities for those from such backgrounds and offer an economic voice.
However, there are unattainably high barriers to entry in starting a food business due to lack of access to networks of support and mentoring, affordable kitchen space and startup capital. That's where FoodLab comes in.

Since 2019 we have helped launch over 25 businesses from new products, catering, and food service categories.
